Benefits of Bison for Your Dog

At JJ Bison, many customers have approached us to discuss bison and its benefits with both humans and their best friends. A man’s best friend is his dog, and everyone wants to make sure their dog has all the best to ensure their wellbeing is considered. Just as bison lends a variety of benefits to humans, these benefits can also be seen in dogs!

Protein

According to Because, Animals, dogs need at least 1g per body weight daily, and bison is a fantastic way to get protein fast and easily. Bison is lean meat that is low in saturated fat and contains a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids which are considered “good fats” that aid in the development of the visual cortex and can help alleviate allergies and regulate blood clotting. At 2.65g per 1-tablespoon compared to beef’s 2.46g per 1 tablespoon, bison’s protein content is much greater and healthier than the traditional beef foods. Due to the strict USDA rules on bison versus beef, you can also rest assured bison will not be given any growth hormones or antibiotics. Overall, if your dog needs to gain protein fast, it is recommended to feed your dog bison over beef.

Vitamin Content And Your Dogs Immune System

Just like humans require several vitamins daily to stay healthy, the same goes for dogs! Bison is high in B vitamins which your dog uses to convert into useable energy. B vitamins have a direct impact on humans as well as a dog’s energy, brain functionality, and cell metabolism, and by eating vitamin B, your dog is preventing infections and promoting cell health. Additionally, bison contains zinc and iron which improves immune systems and energy than traditional dry food may not be able to provide.

Allergies and Your Dog

Unfortunately, some dogs suffer from food sensitivity and/or allergies which can be devastating as a pet owner. In fact, a 2016 study showed that 34% of dogs were allergic to beef, 17% were allergic to dairy, and 15% of dogs were allergic to chicken. Whether it is a snack or a full meal, according to Dr. Karen Shaw Becker, “bison can constitute up to 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake… may be ideal for those who have allergies to common proteins like chicken”. While we always suggest you check with your vet first, there is a good chance your dog will thrive on bison if allergic to other traditional options.

How to Feed Your Dog Bison

At JJ Bison, we want to help your pup as much as possible, so while we do sell bison hearts and livers that can be ground up for dog food, we also highly suggest you research other vendors who sell with bison as well. According to Petfood Industry’s Dog and Cat Food Ingredient Center database, over 58 dog and cat foods and treats utilize bison, so while the list is slim, there are plenty of options! There are many comparisons that can be made between what a human needs and what a dog needs, and the science is extremely clear that bison can help both man and man’s best friend.
