Can Bison Have Allergies

Bison, sometimes referred to as the American Buffalo, may seem big and unstoppable, but just like other animals, bison can get allergies. In short, yes, it is possible for a bison to be allergic to certain substances.

Like humans, animals of all types can develop allergies to a wide range of substances, such as food, pollen, chemicals, etc. An allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a normally harmless substance as being harmful and mounts an immune response to it. Responses for humans, for instance, may manifest in a variety of ways, including skin irritation, respiratory problems, digestive issues, and behavioral changes. It is important to note that allergies can be difficult to diagnose in animals, as they may not exhibit the same symptoms as humans. For example, a bison with an allergy to a certain type of grass may not sneeze or have a runny nose, but rather may experience digestive issues.

Because bison are not allowed antibiotics and are heavily regulated, it is essential to talk to a vet before making a medical decision for bison. Overall, it is vital for bison owners and caregivers to be aware of the possibility of allergies in their animals and to take steps to prevent and treat them as necessary.
